Listen and Draw

Reader-in-Residence for Redcar & Cleveland Libraries Kat Lynas, introduces the inspiration behind her final event for Crossing the Tees.

Are audiobooks books? Do they count? I’ve heard these questions asked before in multiple places and yes they are and they do count, certainly, in my opinion anyway! As a Reader-in-Residence, I wanted to shine a light on audiobooks. They are something I have recently started to get more into. Listening while I’m illustrating, pottering about or when I want to wind down. A big catalyst for this was discovering BorrowBox, which allows you to pick from lots of great audiobooks.

I wanted to create an event around audiobooks and the idea for Listen and Draw was born. In Listen and Draw we’ll be using audiobooks from BorrowBox as a starting point for drawing, mark-making and creative exploration.

As you listen, you’ll create artwork in response to an audiobook. There is no ‘right’ way to make work in this session. Instead, we’ll follow the story capturing, place, character and atmosphere through mixed media sketches, scribblings and playful doodles.

This workshop is about creative play and allowing the story to spark visual ideas in unexpected ways. You might be drawn to a piece of dialogue, the feeling of a setting, or even the rhythm of a voice. Your drawings can be abstract or descriptive, detailed or loose, whatever feels natural in the moment.

Join Kat at Redcar Library on Wednesday 1 July 6.30 – 8.30pm for this fun workshop.
