The Hidden Gems of Redcar Library

by Reader-in-Residence for Redcar & Cleveland Libraries Kat Lynas

I have been exploring Redcar library. In particular, a number of archive boxes that hold hundreds of historical photographs. Each box revealed unexpected treasures. I soon found time ticking away as I unearthed new images that sparked my imagination.

Some of the photographs were of recognisable figures, like this childhood image of Gertrude Bell.

However, many had little information attached and I found my mind wandering, imagining the lives and experiences of the people they depicted.

Not all the photos were of human subjects. There were images of high streets, housing and a collection of photographs of industry, including documentation of the blast furnaces being built.

I’d like to invite you to join me in digging through the archive and seeing what ideas it sparks. Through collage, drawing and writing we’ll use simple creative prompts to imagine what might lie beyond the frame, what stories could be hidden in plain sight and see how these images can inspire us.

Free event at Saltburn Library on 12th May, from 2-4pm.
No experience needed, just curiosity. All materials provided.
