Blackout Poetry with Kirsten Luckins

Get creative with Kirsten Luckins’ workshops on ‘Erasure’ or ‘Blackout’ poetry. Highlight words and phrases from printed text to a create poem, and use artwork to hide the unwanted words. All materials will be provided and participants will take home a framed piece of original artwork.

Blogging isn’t just about typing words on a screen. It’s not just pretty pictures and social media shares. It’s a place for you to tell your story, talk about what matters to you and make your mark on your own online space.

In this workshop you’ll learn how to decide what to write about, create and personalise your own blog using WordPress, evaluate what makes a good blog and discuss social media sharing. We’ll help you spark your creative ideas and give you the tools to make your blog a creative outlet you can be proud of.

Literary Quiz Night with Sarah Dunnakey

Read Regional author Sarah Dunnakey introduces her novel The Companion and hosts a very special literary quiz. Sarah is a Question Researcher on Mastermind as well as writing and verifying questions for University Challenge and Pointless. Sarah’s work, especially researching the Specialist Subjects on Mastermind, has been a rich source of ideas for her writing. Sarah will firstly talk about The Companion and then host a quiz night specially written for Crossing the Tees Book Festival.

Mudfrog Press Poetry Pamphlet Launch

Date: Friday - 15 June
Location: Middlesbrough Central Library

Mudfog Press launches three women poets from the Tees Valley. These
three small collections, in pamphlet form are part of Mudfog’s ongoing
aim to provide a voice for writers in an area with limited access to
publication.

Marilyn Longstaff launches a themed collection, The Museum of
Spare Parts, infused with irony and dark humour; Gillian Place brings a
rich variety of experience to her writing in her first pamphlet; while Liz
Geraghty’s poems are rooted in the local area and landscape, ranging
through personal and political themes.

Escape: From Page to Performance

Explore the theme of escape and journeys in a day of poetry workshops
with local poets and Senior Lecturers in Creative Writing from Teesside
University, Bob Beagrie and Andy Willoughby. Leading a set of
inspirational exercises in the morning and looking at how performance
techniques can lift the work you have done from page to stage in the
afternoon.
You can then, if you’re feeling brave, perform the results at this evening’s
Electric Kool-Aid Cabaret in the Reference Library, 7pm – 9.30pm.

Teesside’s longest established spoken word and music event presents
an evening of performance with songwriters and poets featuring new work from Andy Willoughby and Bob Beagrie, who were both recently featured in the historic Bloodaxe Anthology of North East Poetry The Land of Three Rivers, lots of special guests, work from the day’s workshops, and a limited open mic so, turn up early if you’d like to sign up to perform a poem or original song.

A Conversation with the Yorkshire Shepherdess

Amanda Owen is a shepherdess, farmer’s wife, mother to nine children, a passionate photographer and a Sunday Times bestselling author. Amanda’s first book The Yorkshire Shepherdess offers an inspiring account of her transformation from Huddersfield townie to rural sheep farmer. Her second book A Year in the Life of the Yorkshire Shepherdess made it to number 2 in the bestsellers charts.
